On September 17, National Bar Association members from across the county will join together and visit local area school an discuss the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act which gave the Federal Government the means to enforce the promises of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. This Act prohibited discrimination in public places, allowed the integration of public facilities and schools, and forbade discrimination in employment.

The National Bar Association’s Awards Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Wiley A. Branton Award, named in honor of attorney and civil rights activist Wiley A. Branton. This award is presented “to a person or person(s) demonstrating or have demonstrated leadership on the cutting edge of law for civil, social and economic justice.” Past recipients of the award include: The Little Rock Nine, Jewel LaFontant-Mankarious, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah, and Rev. Dr. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
This year the NBA will host the 25th Annual Wiley A. Branton Issues Symposiums In honor of this milestone, four Issues Symposiums will be held from October 10- November 7, 2014. One recipient of the Wiley A. Branton Award will be recognized at each Symposium.
